Mayor & Council
The City of Sylvester is a Council-Manager administered government, with an elected Mayor and four elected councilpersons. The Mayor and councilmembers are voted on by the citizens of Sylvester.
Council meetings are held on the third Monday of each month. If you wish to appear before the Council, make your request to the City Clerk by 12 Noon on the Wednesday before the meeting.
A work session is held on the first Monday of each month and citizens are welcomed.
Bill J. Yearta
Bill Yearta is in his forth term as mayor of Sylvester. He served as a city council member from January of 1998 until December of 2001. He then became mayor in January of 2001. Yearta has been a Sylvester businessman for 28 years. He owns a retail jewelry and gift store, Fletcher and Yearta, in downtown Sylvester. Mr. Yearta also serves as Chairman of the MEAG Board.

Melvin J. Powell Jr. represents District 1 for the City of Sylvester. Powell joined the City Council in January of 1996. Powell is a Worth County High graduate from the class of 1976. He has served on the Worth County Recreation Board for 8 years and is a Committee Delegate Board member for the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia. Powell currently works at Olam Edible Nuts where he serves as the Production Supervisor. He has worked for this peanut company for 30 years.

Randy Hill represents District 2 for the City of Sylvester. Hill joined the City Council in March 2006 and has served five years. Hill is a Board of Director serving for the Margaret Jones Public Library. He is a retired Civil Service employee from the Marine Base stationed in Albany, Georgia. Hill is a native of Sylvester, graduating from Worth County High School in 1973. Randy Hill is also a veteran of the United States Army.

Charles Jones represents District 3 for the City of Sylvester. Jones joined the City Council in January of 2010. Jones is a local business owner for Jenny’s Dress Shop located downtown. Jones serves as a Board of Director for the Downtown Development Authority and is an active Design Committee member enhancing and persevering Sylvester’s historical downtown. Jones is a native of Worth County. He served in the US Air force and returned to Sylvester to work for the Water, Gas and Light Department where he retired with 57 years of service.

Larry Johnson represents District 4 for the City of Sylvester. Johnson joined the City Council in January of 1994. Johnson is retired from his position as Highway Maintenance Foreman for the Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT). He was responsible for the maintenance of over 680 road miles in his home county of Worth. Johnson has served in a leadership role on numerous civic boards including the Sylvester Worth County Recreation Board, the Men United Club, Inc. and was the first Black board member with the Sylvester Worth County Chamber of Commerce. Other civic affiliations include Georgia DOT Transportation Engineers Association, Georgia Municipal Association, and the Prince Hall Lodge #130 Mason.
